My hydrangea quest. Day 2, part 1

14.04, Tokyu theatre Orb
Never liked these seats close to the stage. Especially the seats far to the sides from the stage centre. Until this day, when I saw my dear Kiriya only 2 metres away from me, as close as I've never seen her before. How come her position was on the same side of the stage as my seat?
I guess sometimes, only sometimes, but I can get lucky too...

translation - an interview with Kiriya and Miyazawa about 'Man of La Mancha'

Even though I've stopped posting silly congratulations every time my favourite celebrity or character has a birthday, I just could not miss the birthday of Ms. Kiriya. And I kinda aimed to post this translations on the 2nd, but it ended up being more difficult longer than I expected, so it took me more time to finish. Still it may have some mistakes or look untidy at times, but I hope it's readable. Minor details like schedule and photo caps are not translated.

Interview with ‘La Mancha ladies’ – Hiromu Kiriya and Emma Miyazawa Lafleur, from the musical ‘Man of La Mancha’

The new musical ‘Man of La Mancha’ started in Theatre Brava in Osaka.
This year’s new cast for the play has attracted a lot of attention, not without these two ladies who adorned the new version with their performance. We had a chance to talk with Hiromu Kiriya, who played Aldonza, and Emma Miyazawa Lafleur, who played Antonia.
*Stage photos and interview touch upon the play contents, those who wish to watch the play without knowing anything please beware of spoilers*

– ‘Man of La Mancha’ has started! First of all, please tell us about your feelings after the premiere.

Kiriya
When the first performance ended, I felt very excited and thought ‘so, it has finally started!’
The first day is always a very special occasion, I had adrenalin rush, I felt elevated, and I realised once again that my task is to make these high spirits last and to keep my concentration till the last day.
Also, we’re newbies here (laughs). When we start performing on stage, every day brings something new and different from the rehearsal. We need to reflect upon ourselves, and discover new things, and develop ourselves again and again to make our acting even deeper. Okay, next is your turn, Emma!

Miyazawa
On the first day I felt a little relieved, but I also realised how important it is to keep doing my best.
Of course we practiced a lot during rehearsals, but the real setting, stage with a slight tilt, lighting, costumes… I felt that I could not cope with all these things perfectly. I wondered if even after all that rehearsing, being on a real stage can be so different.
However, at the same time I became fully aware of how I want to show my character that has been passed down to me from so many previous generations, which is a very important thing for me. I felt like I finally became able to grasp that freedom that is necessary to make a character ‘mine’. Just like Ms. Kiriya said, every day is full of reflection and discoveries.

– Ms. Kiriya just mentioned that you two are ‘newbies’, which makes you kind of ‘colleagues’ who joined the ‘La Mancha family’ this year.

Kiriya
Actually the difference in our age is very big, but she’s such a serious young woman that I don’t feel any generation gap at all! (laughs)
We chatted with her from the very start… oh, I should have said ‘we had a pleasant conversation’.

Miyazawa
No, no, it’s me who should… (laughs) Actually, when I came to the rehearsal, Ms. Kiriya had been practicng for around one week already, so I just stuck to her like a bur and learned a lot of things from her.

Kiriya
Yes, there were a lot of things we did not know when we first came, but there are so few women in the ‘La Mancha’ cast that our colleagues who had been in the play longer said: ‘We are few, but let’s unite and do our best!’ and greeted us very warmly, with a welcome atmosphere, and the female cast became very strongly united.

– And now let’s hear about ‘The La Mancha ladies’!

Miyazawa
I remember how Kohko (Kohko Arai who played the maid) said ‘All ladies in La Mancha are manly!’

Kiriya
That’s right, they are really like men! (laughs) A lot of characters are very manful. Maybe they just can’t exist among those ruffians if they aren’t like that, they have to be strong enough to be on par with them.

Miyazawa
And there is not a single scene where there would be only females, I guess it’s female rather than make characters who add spice to the story and make it more interesting. That is why inevitably people with strong personalities gather in this performance.

Kiriya
And when those ‘ruffians’ deal with such ladies, they become so caring, complete opposite to what they are usually! (laughs) I just can’t help loving this personality gap!

Miyazawa
It’s true, everybody is so caring! (laughs)

– It feels like I begin to see what ‘The La Mancha family’ is like. (laughs)

When we speak of the central figure in the play, of course it’s him! Mr. Koshiro Matsumoto.

Kiriya
We’re close like members of a theatrical troupe. It’s my third year after I graduated from Takarazuka, and Emma has been in this profession for 2 years, so how should I put it, it has not been long since we entered this world, at least it feels like something new.

– But Ms. Kiriya had a brilliant career of a Top Star previously [in Takarazuka]

Kiriya
Oh, I just wanted to pretend I’m a rookie too! (laughs) But you see, I can say without any doubt it’s the first time I see such a serious company.
Mr. Matsumoto is in the top of our pyramid, and everybody down to the ensemble really faces the same direction. What I said about ourselves, ‘constant reflection and discoveries’, applies to Mr. Koshiro, too, he is the best example of that.
As I myself have been in such a troupe previously, it feels nostalgic and very pleasant. I do think there aren’t many companies where everybody is so united like here. From this prospective, I really think we are able to present a very precious artwork to our audience.

Miyazawa
What makes one feel that he’s in a troupe, is that somebody from the ensemble can become a muleteer later, so one inherits his role from another person. During our harsh rehearsals we are all comrades, and we are all competitors, and I feel that all of us are brought together by Mr. Koshiro.
Even with my short history of performing I can understand that now I am able to experience something that is not easily available for every actor.

– The opportunity to inherit something precious is reverberating with the ‘La Mancha’ story, right?

Kiriya
My story really resembles the story of my character, at least I can say I entered the performance in confusion and gradually became more refined. I felt the same process unfolding during the rehearsals.

– Mr. Koshiro Matsumoto is not only the main performer but also the director of the play. Tell us more about him, please.

Miyazawa
I remember one day Mr. Koshiro was holding an English version of the libretto and asked me, ‘Emma, do you know what this means in English?’ Even though there would be nothing strange if the role that I have rehearsed for more than 1200 times became so stiff that I could say ‘it should be like this and like this only’, he still draws our attention to subtle nuances in the script and makes us change our style. I can say I was impressed by his flexibility.

Kiriya
I cannot but agree. Mr. Koshiro loves the play so dearly and has met and parted with so many people in his life of a performer, he is a personification of the ‘Man of La Mancha’. We cannot possibly compete with him no matter how we try. And still he is very open-minded and treats even newbies like us kindly, and helps us to cope with our naïve problems.

– Please tell us about your roles.

Kiriya
There are a lot of scenes where we face each other one-on-one with Mr. Koshiro, and though I knew from the start I wouldn’t be able to be on par with him, my initial feelings were ‘can I really stand here next to him?’, ‘do I really count as his equal?’ and so on.

Miyazawa
As I have watched a lot of scenes from aside during the rehearsals, I’d like to mention (laughs) that Ms. Kiriya had been really impressive from the very start! So cool!
Your every movement was so beautiful, I know it’s not ‘mie’ pose, but surely it’s impossible to copy. I was so impressed that I literally wanted to applaud in excitement.

Kiriya
But you know, there was some inner conflict within me, still (laughs).
And I wouldn’t be happy if I were only told that I was cool…
I want people to say ‘why, she was sexy!’ too! (laughs)
Well, even if I say that, Aldonza would be just too pitiful if she were weak, living among those muleteers.
I personally wanted to show her as a woman who lives to the fullest in those circumstances.

Miyazawa
That’s true. Even though she lived in poor conditions, we don’t want her to be just poor. I don’t know if our image was influenced too much by the movie with Sophia Loren, but even though she uses her (female) sexiness as her weapon, her appeal is not in that! Cervantes, Don Quixote can see that.
The Aldonza played by Ms. Kiriya was showing a glimpse of Dulcinea right from the start!
That’s why when Don Quixote addresses her as ‘Dulcinea’, you can understand what he is speaking about.
And then there are those muleteers who don’t see that. Of course, their life is not very easy, too, but the image of a person that they see and the image that Don Quixote sees are very distinct and that’s so wonderful!
Oh, I am sorry, I became a little heated (laughs).
And also, Ms. Kiriya, your sexy parts were sexy enough!

Kiriya
Oh thank you, you’re so considerate (laughs).
Your character, Antonia, is also very difficult, right?

Miyazawa
She is a curious character. During the rehearsals I was constantly thinking, how should I play Antonia in a way that would be best for the performance?
During the workshops I tried to act as if Antonia, the maid and padre were extremely good people and Carrasco the villain, and next time I tried to act the opposite. And then I realised that when I acted as a good person my acting was very questionable, but when I acted as a bad person I was simply doing whatever I wanted straightforwardly.
Of course the setting of the workshops is an extreme thing, but when I tried to perform in different ways like that, I got a strong feeling that while for Don Quixote Antonia is a villain, she is just trying to survive doing whatever she can.
That’s why I understood that the secret is not to centre on her affections and make Antonia a ‘vicious woman’, but to keep the important balance. With these feelings I was rehearsing every day.

Kiriya
I totally agree. For a woman the only means to survive at that time was to marry a man from a noble family so that she could become a noble woman. If it were Aldonza, she would probably earn for living with hard labour and selling her body, there was no other way for her, and I think others were, too, surviving by clinging to something.
And in such circumstances it’s only natural that relatives would be troubled having such a free-spirited uncle. At first I imagined Antonia to be a role of a ‘noble young girl’, but then when I saw Emma portraying Antonia, she was a level-headed girl saying what she wants straightforwardly, and I couldn’t help sympathising with her: ‘of course she would be bothered by such an uncle’.
So, as for what that ‘something’ everybody clings to is, Cervantes has written about it in his play within a play, in the ‘Man of La Mancha’.
Don Quixote once says: ‘If you just compromise with the world you live in, what will you get?’ However, you can’t live in the real world without compromising anything. There is such a conflict. And what’s appealing in this story is that it does not simply portray the characters as ‘good’ or ‘bad’, but just shows how every of them tries to live in their own circumstances.

Miyazawa
If you watch from the start and then watch about the journey of Don Quixote, you’d be impressed and inspired, but as Antonia I can’t really…

Kiriya
Pursuing your dream freely – of course it’s a wonderful way of life, but… You can’t help thinking about that ‘but’, right?

Miyazawa
Yes! You can’t just search for new adventures every day! That’s what she ends up thinking.
She loves him as her relative, but she can’t help thinking ‘I have my own life, too, you know’.
And when Quixano finally returns home and wants to spend his time peacefully, a strange woman appears before him and makes him remember it all. He doesn’t want to hear about it, but he can’t ignore the fact that something outstanding happens in front of his eyes, there’s nothing else to say.
If one’s family does not support him in pursuing his dream, it must be so painful that I cannot endure imagining it really.

Kiriya
That’s right! Even though this story is about ‘endless dreams’, it does not fail to depict reality very well, too.
In the end of this play the characters go back to their reality, which equals imprisonment, and Cervantes leaves them, so what awaits them in the future? They will stay in prison just like before. When I saw it, I felt like, you know… it’s very cruel.
Maybe the audience, too, will be moved by the story of the man of La Mancha and leave the theatre full with emotions, but the next day they would have to go to work etc.
Of course they would receive energy for living from that play, but they would have to face reality, too. And still, I think something may change inside them, even if just a little. This is surely a play that leaves a strong aftertaste.

Miyazawa
And that’s probably what makes this play different from others. It does not end with the characters escaping from reality, it has something dark in it, and that leaves a very strong impression.

Kiriya
And also, Emma, your character appears on the stage only at some moments, don’t you feel anxious about that?

Miyazawa
I do! There is one highlight scene when I sing, at least it’s an important scene for Antonia, and it comes in the first half of the play, but until that moment I feel extremely anxious! (laughs) And when it ends, I feel a bit relieved…
Though I feel relieved in the same way during our rehearsals, they always take place in front of my eyes, so I can see the rest of the play and share the same atmosphere with those who are engaged in it, but in the real performance [when the scene ends] we go backstage. And from there we must return to the stage where Mr. Koshiro and Ms. Kiriya have created a very tense atmosphere. Being able to enter the stage without breaking that atmosphere, concentrated and keeping the necessary spirit, is a skill that’s difficult to develop. It’s a challenge for me to mobilise myself when needed and to sense the mood, so for me it’s both hard and pleasant to take part in the performance every day.

– It may be a slightly difficult question to answer right away, but what would be your favourite line in ‘Man of La Mancha’, which is a source of many great lines to quote?

*short silence*

Kiriya
Well, I wouldn’t say it’s a phrase I particularly like or dislike, but there is one very difficult phrase that I fight with every day: ‘My name is Dulcinea’, my last words in the play.
Before that I say several times: ‘would you look at me as I really am’, that’s an important thing to notice. And when Aldonza utters ‘My name is Dulcinea’ in the end of the play, if you view her from aside, it’s really astonishing. It’s very difficult to say that phrase with appropriate energy, and in order to pronounce it properly I must live as Aldonza before that with all my might.
There isn’t any established way to say it and there’s no end to it, probably I will think over that phrase until the very closing night.
Emma, how about you?

Miyazawa
It may be a very plain choice, but I’d pick ‘Facts are the enemy of truth’.
It’s a scene where everybody holds their breath. And from that point, the narration of the play changes, too. The spectators may think ‘I was sure he was just a strange old guy, but maybe I could listen to what he says?’, and become aware that there are different ways to view things. After watching the play one realises that it’s not the most important thing to pursue only what is right in front of his eyes.
What’s even more interesting for me in this play, that line alone is pronounced very distinctly. In truth, maybe Alonso Quixana is not as mad as everybody thinks, maybe he’s even Cervantes himself. In other words, it’s not Quixana (Quixote) confronting Carrasco, but Cervantes confronting the prisoners.
And while I am thinking about that, he starts to say something about the golden helmet of Mambrino.
And there’s the scene with ‘nobody but you sees it!’ (laughs)

Kiriya
When we saw this scene for the first time, we all talked about how wonderful it was.
Unexpected to themselves, the muleteers start singing with him, or start crying because of emotional movement. It’s a very funny scene, but everybody starts to follow Don Quixote before they even know it. It is a wonderful and interesting point about this play.

Miyazawa
It's not what you say, but how you say it, right? I thought that it must be how charismatic people get others involved in their adventures.

Kiriya
Also, Don Quixote gets a dirty cloth from Aldonza as a memento of his lady Dulcinea, and in the scene with the helmet of Mambrino he attaches it to his helmet to mark it.
Everybody says it smells, but Don Quixote at first says ‘what a wonderful aroma!’
Has his sense of smell gone bad, or does he feel that the smell is pleasant because he adores his lady so much? Which one is true? It’s a scene that only gets more interesting the more you watch it.

Miyazawa
Yes, that’s what makes the play so interesting because you discover it when you see it for the second or for the third time.

– You seem to love this play even as spectators, not only as actresses taking part in it!

Kiriya
Speaking about the audience, after Aldonza is violated by muleteers, she sings a song expressing her pain, and there are times when she receives a lot of applause and when she does not. I myself always end up thinking ‘you needn’t really to applaud that much!’ (laughs), because within the story it’s a very shocking development that makes you say ‘what?!’.

Miyazawa
That’s because you would want to applaud the person who sings, but you cannot applaud what occurred. There are times when people applaud and when they don’t, but I feel I can understand the feelings of both.

Kiriya
That’s right, it’s not like one of those reactions is right and the other isn’t, it’s just that I feel the one when the audience is taken aback by what happens is even more ‘real’ [than when they applaud]. Both of them are possible, and the atmosphere is completely different in these two situations.

Miyazawa
Sometimes I think ‘today’s audience is unusually silent’, but then at the curtain call they start applauding vigorously, or even give us a standing ovation.
Then I understand that they have just been deeply immersed into the story.

Kiriya
This story is a play within a play, so everyone who watches it is a prisoner, and everyone listens to the Cervantes’s story. When the story goes from the play within a play back to reality (which equals prison) the audience may relax, and the atmosphere in the hall changes suddenly. That’s what I understood after the curtain went up.
It’s a thing Mr. Koshiro was always saying, too, but now I understand myself that the play is complete only when it has spectators.

– So, please tell us again what the appeal of 'Man of La Mancha' is as you see it, being members of the 'La Mancha family'.

Kiriya
I know it must sound strange because I'm one of the actors here, but this performance is well done. It’s so good that I want to see it from a seat in the audience. (laughs)

Miyazawa
That’s true! I felt the same way during rehearsals, and even though I must confess I'm not the type who watches the same scene again and again, it’s interesting to watch 'La Mancha’ many times. Now I feel like the two of us are promoting the play here (laughs), but sometimes I make discoveries like ‘so that's what it means!' or 'today the dialogue's timing is different!'.

Kiriya
Of course there is the appeal of this play that has been staged so many times, but I feel deeply that it's also important that it is still changing. Our ‘naïve problems’ of actresses who have just joined the company are welcome here. They tell us not to hesitate to express our vision so that they could think over things that have become natural for them since they have been acting in this play for such a long time, and so that they could bring something new into it. It’s praiseworthy that their stance is to make the performance even better with the help of the new cast that they are having now, at this moment.

Miyazawa
Yes, it’s so great! The troupe of 'La Mancha’ is great because it can boast both long history and flexibility, because it accepts different points of view.

– And at last, please leave a message for fans of ‘Man of La Mancha’ and for those who haven’t seen it yet.

Miyazawa
I have heard opinions that ‘La Mancha’ is difficult, but the truth is, its story is very simple.
When you hear such words as ‘medieval Spain', 'wandering knight', ‘Inquisition’, you may think for a moment that you’ll have trouble with understanding the contents, but in this play the story moves forward without fixating too much on such matters. If you hesitate whether to watch this play or not because it seems difficult, then rest assured, you can enjoy it without any worries.

Kiriya
This work describes different people and their way of living, being based on an old book that has been recognised as one of the greatest literary works. We are new to this play, but I feel great meaning in the fact that I have been able to become a part of it. I feel that my spirit of a performer has been tempered in ‘La Mancha’, so I want to keep acting with pride, and the source of such determination is the presence of Cervantes, of Mr. Koshiro.

Miyazawa
When he is with you on the stage, nobody can be lazy in his acting, right?
Leaving the question whether he does it well or not aside, everybody wants to become even better and rise on the same high level, nobody would want to drag down his partner.

Kiriya
And in this manner our performance will develop up until the closing night, so I’d be happy if you come to watch it, maybe even several times.

– Thank you very much! Now the next performance seems even more interesting and attractive.

Mss. Kiriya and Emma let us speak with them even though they were tired after their first performance, and the interview progressed very lively.
Having their own opinions and loving the play deeply, they became even more eager to talk when we touched upon the subject of the play, the cast and the roles of their respective characters.
We can surely look forward to their future projects, which will be even more interesting now that they have taken part in such a play as ‘Man of La Mancha'.

26 December 2014

Osaka and Tokyo in December, chapter 2. Day 8

song of the day - 'Jingle Bells'. because girls from the troupe in Seinenkan were singing it in the break between the acts of 'Two gentlemen of Verona'

10.30, hotel
Yesterday when someone knocked at our door we decided we're too tired to open and have a conversation, so we just went to bed. Now I see what that was about!

11.15, Tokyo Daijingu
And two lonely girls went there to pray for happiness in romance... Haha, as if. Just bought a few cute charms for me and my friends.

13.30, Nippon Seinenkan
I though we'd be wiser this time, but again we're extremely late for the musical. Well, we managed to get to our seats just in time, 2 minutes before start.

16.30
Kiriya-sama! <3 And mr. Nishikawa. You did surprise me.

16.37
Of course I cannot pass by such a wonderful stand and take no photo for a nice memory
Now this looks extremely Klimt-ish, if you understand me

At the entrance to Seinenkan
and to Zuka

17.10
I know that Hibiya Chanter is connected with Zuka because there's a Quatre Reves shop in there, by the way it's open much later than the one in the Theatre is. However, I didn't expect such a treat. Real costumes on display in the halls of the shopping mall! Uwwww..... I guess they collaborate with Zuka sometimes in Chanter, right?
'U-tan, please make a very natural photo of me!' haha... >___<

18.10, Roppongi sta.
After arguing for several days whether it is better to go to see Christmas illuminations in Caretta Shiodome, so praised by Lili Florea, or visit Tokyo Midtown, like my consul has recommended, we made our decision choosing the latter, but ended up standing in a long queue in order to visit Tim Burton's exhibition. I can see already how this trip turns to be half-planned half-impromptu. Not bad, right? Having a brief look at what Roppongi Hills is like is not bad either.

20.15
Even though I left the exhibition extremely tired, I must say this was a chance that we couldn't really miss. Though I really didn't intend to spend so much time there, so we didn't manage to save any energy to go to Midtown like planned. Who knew that the exhibition would be THAT big and THAAAT crowded?!

20.40
I guess there's not even a single decent spot to have some supper for a budget traveller at Roppongi. All restaurants are expensive and nowhere to find shelter for some 500 yen.

20.55
At last we found a small Japanese fast-food cafe. What can I say? Katsu-don is the best.

23.25, hotel
Good night!
says the team of  'Two gentlemen of Verona' to you.

KiriMari, dancing starshine

when one has a lot of things to do, one often ends up doing nothing from the to-do list, but something completely irrelevant. so here it is, the result of my 'whatever but not preparing for the exam'
as always, I use videos with my favourite one and only Top Combi, this time pairing them with a wonderful song which is 33 years old already, but still sounds fresh and unique - 'Dansing Starshine' by Momoe Yamaguchi. I used to love this song until I made a video with it love this song because of its 80s mood (composed in 1980 exactly), vividness and brightness and warmness of the melody, and of course, the wonderful voice of ms Yamaguchi. the lyrics with translation will follow very soon in a separate post, but I can say now that I believe the words and the song title itself suit the two perfectly. they were are like starshine on the stage

02 October 2013

happy birthday ms Kiriya

the truth is, I stopped celebrating birthdays of people I like or admire, but can I fail to say 'congratulations' to ms Kiriya...
when I recall how sad I was when I heard about her retirement, I fell a bit strange. now that I know she did not disappear completely. oh my God how I want to see her 'gentlewoman'... but work is not the same as studying, you cannot skip and then make up for it that simple.
oh my god what shall I do

26 July 2013

that's kind of very late but...

That's kind of late, but I learned that ms Kiriya is having her second concert in November-December, this time adding Osaka to the performance places list. Obviously the fans' voices from her native place reached her. But that's not the only problem.
If I would ever like to go to Siam Shade's live, this is probably my only chance. I only came to know about them 8 years ago, which was after their disbandment and visiting Japan in 2007 was impossible, so the only time I could really see them was in 2011 when they played in some concert after the Great Earthquake, but that was not destined to happen, of course. And now they are having a row of lives. 2 of them in November, again.
and it feels like 'once a lifetime'. but... it's kind of late

16 May 2013

IMHO. Kiriya Hiromu 'My Treasure' ~ let us look at the 18 years in brief

'in brief' is, of course, 'in brief' in comparison with simply watching all the performances of ms Kiriya through the 18 years, but this 'brief' was no less than an hour and a half. to be precise, 1-40, as far as I remember
another hour and a half are allotted for the Farewell Show. which is, again, a compilation of famous songs and numbers from different shows

part 1. collection of recollection
well, literally the first part is called 'collection of performances of the memories'. or something like this. ms Kiriya talks about her past and describes every period in her Takarazuka life. the earliest periods are all Greek to me (something sounds wrong here...) and this is why watching scenes from 90s was so interesting
watching scenes from early performances is also fun because you get to see many other familiar faces...

after watching these short excerpts I cannot help searching for the full performances. just a few days ago we talked with +Арагорн Араторнович about the 90s and agreed that we both would be happy to have been born 5-7 years earlier. there is something in the 90s that is lost nowadays. 90s were tough and harsh, but they were cool

you also get to see how wonderful were the relationships with the Tops and hear stories about old times - when everything was different

part 2. Sayonara
Farewell Show starts with the ceremony of entrance - 'twas surprising to see that name plates of retiring siennes were decorated with spangles, bows, fur etc.
the show was nothing new to those who are acquainted with the performances of Kiriya Top period
the last number was conducted with the help of 'light sea' - the audience who waved special light pens

conclusion
mostly I feel surprised when I hear about people who watch performances and other Takarazuka videos without knowing Japanese. in my mind, they lose so much. well, I cannot imagine loving a particular culture without knowing its language, and plan to learn a few other languages I like. this time, 'tis important to understand what ms Kiriya says. her stage presence may be whatever, her own image is different. if you are ok with simply recollecting ms Kiriya's important steps in Takarazuka and watching the final performance, then you can simply skip all the parts where she talks. if you like ms Kiriya as I do and know enough Japanese to understand her, those parts will help you to understand her as a person and will, I hope, become an indispensable treasure to you
yeah, Treasure

08 May 2013

My Fair Lady has started ~ and I am writing my graduation thesis

I am going to die right now. just here and now. did you see it??? they are both so adorable, ms Kiriya and ms Matobu. 'wish you were here...' - oh, wrong. 'wish I were there'!
translations will follow very soon. I promise

24 April 2013

IMHO. Kiriya Hiromu Dinner Show 'Grand Dreamer' ~ is there life after Takarazuka

when I am in a pinch, nothing is better that something Takarazuka related
they say, when one has to do a lot of hard work, 'tis better to divide it into parts and periodically award yourself with something. I am not fond of this theory, but there is no doubt that everybody has to relax somehow
show
why would a person watch dinner shows? of course, unlike regular performances, the reason, meseems, would be that the show is lead by one's favourite sienne. what else? maybe one may want to see another kind of Takarazuka performances and understand Takarazuka Revue better. maybe one would want to look at another, non-lead sienne. all these motives are united by the fact that a dinner show creates a special atmosphere, different from other performances - something very intimate, unofficial, unstrained
together with Kiriya there were 4 siennes - Isshiki and Aoki as retiring members, as well as Miyako and Touka. after having a chance to see them in such relaxed atmosphere, I love them even more, especially miss Yurino. she is absolutely adorable. Isshiki and Aoki too, showed their 'human' sides
unlike what I expected, the show was a masterpiece of entertainment and mood-making. almost all numbers were chosen so that they would lighten up the mood of the guests and almost all songs were creating positive atmosphere. even 'Kitsch' had its lyrics rewritten to create a funny situation with a mug Kiriya was holding during the song
only 'yami ga hirogaru' and a few other songs were serious. after listening to all of them I can say one thing for sure. no Western musical in its original form will ever impress me, from now on. you must see for yourself how great the siennes are - in regards to singing, in regards to acting - even if they participate not in a Grand performance, but only in a small entertaining dinner show

only one thing makes me wonder about the phenomenon of Takarazuka Revue. look at who are most of the fans. yes, young women are pretty rare

is there any way to change your opinion on a song? hear it sung by your favourite sienne. this is what happened with 'Fly Me to the Moon'. the fast jazz arrangement and incredible score for five singers made it into a wonderful pleasant song, unlike what it seemed to me in its original version

translation. 'My Fair Lady' production announcement ~ or something like this 'tis called. methinks...

Waiting for the next chapter of KwMs to appear right now or a few hours later - oh okay, I will wait for one more day... or two... - tonikaku! It was very hard, for some reason. So, for a few days before and right after the release I was absolutely absent from 'this day and age' (c)
Now that I have reread it several dozens of times, and even thought of translating it into English (ooops I said it), my mind is finally determined and strong-willed (mind? strong-willed?). KwMs will be eventually translated by those who undertook this mission, and Kiriya-sama's news won't - because this mission is undertaken by me, huh?
'thas been almost a month since the musical presentation was held, and I am posting this translation only now - because I was lazy and unwilling to do anything - so this post must have lost its topicality as of now. also, due to the same laziness I did not translate the comments of other actors than former Takarazuka ladies
_____
‘My Fair Lady’ is known as the first among the Broadway musicals to be played by Japanese in the Japanese language. Since the first performance in 1963, actresses representing their respective eras have been playing the leading part in this musical, and now it has reached its 50th anniversary and is being reborn with new cast and direction. The starring actresses Hiromu Kiriya and Sei Matobu, together with Yasufumi Terawaki, Ryosei Tayama, Takashi Matsuo and Kyoko Enami attended the conference on the production announcement, held on Feb. 21.
The setting is the Downtown London. Eliza, a flower girl, meets Higgins, a linguist, under unusual circumstances, and begins to learn proper speech and manners. Eventually Eliza completely turns into a lady, but she realises she is nothing more than an object of experiment to the professor, and leaves his side…
Hiromu Kiriya and Sei Matobu, who play the leading part, are both former Top Stars of Takarazuka Revue. Kiriya accepted the offer while in the middle of her last performance before retirement, and said she needed 3 month to decide whether to act or not, commenting: ‘I like this play a lot. However, as I was always focusing on Higgins (in the movie, so as to study male role playing), I still find it a little difficult to change myself to Eliza (laughs).' Also, she expressed her enthusiasm: ‘Rehearsing more and more, I want to create a musical that everyone will enjoy.’ In contrast to her, Sei Matobu, who after graduation from the Revue was feeling like having done with musicals, spoke with deep emotions: ‘While I had the image that this is a great play, I had a vague feeling of wanting to act in ‘My Fair Lady’. Now I feel when you wish for something, it can really come true.’
Though he was not present at the conference, G2, who was working with the new translation, adaptation and direction, conveyed his comment full of ardour of challenging the famous work: ‘We were aiming not at a remake, but at a ‘rebirth’ of this play which would paint Eliza’s role as more “life-sized”, would appeal more to the modern Japanese people, penetrate their hearts more.’
The cast members' comments are as follows.
Hiromu Kiriya – Eliza
When the role of Eliza was announced I received a big reaction from those who surrounded me, and I realised once again that this play is truly loved by everyone. While being constantly staged respectfully, ‘My Fair Lady’ has reached its 50th anniversary. The musical is being reborn now, but I am also starting a new career after I graduated from Takarazuka last year. With the energy of this play, which is being reborn, I want to act in my way… The words I have received put a lot of pressure on me (from the presenter: ‘Eliza, who turns into a lovely lady from a flower girl in Downtown’), but I sincerely want to show how Eliza becomes a lady from being a flower girl, and to deliver an enjoyable performance with all the honourable members (of the cast).
Sei Matobu – Eliza
While I have a feeling of happiness of being able to play in a new version of ‘My Fair Lady’ in the year when the 50th anniversary of the musical must be celebrated, I also feel the weight of importance of this fact. However, I am sure that when it comes to musicals, both the cast members and the audience who come to see us can enjoy their time with a light-hearted feeling, and it was the same during my being in Takarazuka. I hope you will look forward to seeing this performance, as I truly want to create a new ‘My Fair Lady’ together with the new cast, with all my might, and enjoying myself, too. When I remember that this play is known by everyone, and that there are a lot of people who have been acting in this musical generation after generation, I understand this performance is unfathomable, and I simply cannot move on… (laughs) but I want to put this aside, and I truly want to act with all my might in the way I can.

facebook usefullness

what is the meaning of adding a celebrity into your circles or subscribing to his/her news or putting his/her page into 'interests' if he/she does not reply personally to the comments and never addresses any fan directly? the communication does not become much easier, and the dialogue is not established. of course, you get to know the news faster, but 'tis seldom that one can have a real conversation or feel becoming any closer
what I gained by Kiriya-sama's creating a page on FB? her seldom posts with casual photos? or showing everyone who visits my own page that I like her?
of course 'tis important, but there is something else. I just happened to notice a comment from a person who went to watch 'Spring Snow'. and she saw Kiriya-sama going from the backstage to her seat. this means, Kiriya-sama went to see the performance, too, and went to greet the siennes as well
this is an episode I was happy to know about

something I will probably someday rip, if I overcome my laziness and find a good program for ripping, or find a person who will recommend me such a program

something to cling to

'Eternity is like the current of a river with no end. If you have nothing to cling to, you will be taken under, never to resurface'
from 'Dance in the Vampire Bund'

after watching my own videos on YT I understood one thing. I caught myself thinking 'oh, so THIS is why I came to love them so much' - in other words, I have already forgotten that feeling. I've became estranged from them. I have already got used to the fact that this has come to the finish
Princess Mina and other vampires of her court said that vampires can live by the power of a single memory of their past. I promised myself the same, too. I wonder if I will live up to this promise

video! Amore e Musica original by Russell Watson ~ am I biased, as usual?

let me be honest. I wasn't as impressed as Kiriya-sama by this song. needless to say, I like her version more - and this has nothing to do with the fact that I love her, the reason is that I think Mr Watson's voice doesn't fit this song. or... maybe... this is really because I heard Kiriya-sama's version first...?

translation! Kiriya-sama's interview about her First Concert

it started when I was searching for a big 'Amore e Musica' poster to use as my Google Calendar background. the light blue and white colours used in it look very soothing to me. the necessary image being only in 2 variants among the search result, I noticed a few photos yet unknown to me. they were obviously post-graduate ones, but I had never seen them before, which meant some new events happened and I knew nothing of the sort and new articles and interviews appeared
suddenly all my doubts vanished, and the feeling of being absolutely tired and unable to do anything yielded to the urge to translate. a hundred and something of translation pages of official work and some Takarazuka-related articles I have translated recently may seem too unimpressive to enable me to say I have gained a huge experience, but certainly I have made some progress which made translating this time considerably easier than before. probably, 'tis the very process of translating that made me feel so cosy - seeing Kiriya-sama's smiling face, reading the same kind of articles, using the same range of vocabulary was something that helped me to understand there hasn't really been THAT much of a change, compared with the time before Kiriya-sama's graduation or the period right after that. the article isn't too small, but I coped with the task at only 2 laps, though with a forced pause of 3 days between. this is good. this is somewhat... ensuring...
there are a few things I failed to understand - such as the 'first challenge' for Kiriya-sama, as if 'twere her first concert in life...

here 'tis, the original article
The former Takarazuka Revue  Moon Troupe Top Star Kiriya Hiromu's First Concert 'Amore e Musica - Dream Is Endless...' raised the curtain on October, 12 (Fri). We asked her about her feelings during the rehearsal.
Kiriya Hiromu, who mastered all the three arts necessary for a performer - singing, dancing and acting, - graduated from Takarazuka Revue in April. 'It has been 5 months since then, but I don't feel like it has been that long, maybe, because of my busy daily life. I realised that I had graduated only after my new life in Tokyo started. Now I have mixed feelings - on one hand, I am almost itching to perform on stage, but on the other hand, I am a little scared.'
It isn't a rare thing for a Takarasienne to hold concerts, but for Kiriya this will be the first challenge. 'This has been my cherished desire for a long time, and I am very happy that I am able to make it come true. I want to show this feeling on the stage.' she says. 'Amore e Musica' means 'Love and Music' in Italian. After listening to a song of the same name by Russell Watson, an English tenor, deeply impressed Kiriya chose the phrase for the concert title, and she explains her feelings - 'I want to convey the splendour of music and of the love I have received from all the spectators.'
It was also the original idea of Kiriya that the orchestra should play live on stage. Considering other songs than 'Amore e Musica' in the programme Kiriya says 'I want to sing songs that the audience would know very well,' and she included into the concert numbers from the musicals she played in and original Takarazuka songs. Moreover, our interest in the concert cannot cease after her statement - 'I also challenge myself with songs that give the feeling like - what if I try to sing this?'
Sakai Sumio, who is responsible for the concert organisation and directing, music supervisors Yoshida Yuko and Kuratomi Shin'ichi, choreographers ANJU (Anju Mira) and AYAKO, and the others, can be called an 'All Takarazuka' staff, which is promising. 'Rather than suddenly showing a new image, I wanted to cherish my origin which is the Kiriya who owes everything to Takarazuka and thus to move forward. This is why I asked for help those people who already know me. I think, the audience who became my fans when I was a male role player will be able to enjoy the concert without any sense of discomfort.'
On the other hand, it is likely to be a fresh spectacle for the audience to see 4 male dancers also participating in the concert. 'When we hold hands, I sometimes turn my hand palm up and make other mistakes which are a pattern that a person with a male role player experience can easily slip into. This time there is also a scene when I am lifted, but still I feel more at ease when it is me who lifts someone.' Kiriya says, her smiling face showing no worries.
Aiming for the future of an actress, she will reconsider the artistic skills she has been fostering up until now. The concert seems to become a performance that reflects the natural Kiriya she is now. Kiriya Hiromu First Concert 'Amore e Musica ~ Dream is Endless' will take place in Aoyama Theatre from October 12 (Fri) to 14 (Sun).

'tis hard

...5 minutes after the performance of the new Moon Troupe started, one of the spectators came out to the hall. when asked why, she said - 'I am going home, because it is hard to watch Moon Troupe without Mrs Kiriya!'

having a friend who works in Takarazuka doesn't mean I watch every singe performance for free or get behind the curtains or know all the rumours about the members. it only means I know some stories of general character about what is going inside. this story is what she told me in her last e-mail
and this made me finally admit what I have already started to shape. I used a lot of words and wrote huge posts about how I felt, but this fits better

my humble opinion on Kiriya-sama's first concert 'Amore e Musica'. Quatre Reves shopping. thoughts on the new Moon Troupe

it took me a few moments to realise I was not in Takarazuka. then it took me a few minutes to understand I was watching Kiriya-sama live, on the stage. it also took me several numbers to decide whether I like it or still cannot accept it. the full comprehension of what was going on came probably when the first set of numbers finished and a short break with talk session started. 'the same Kiriya-sama, the same gestures and movements, the same walk, and of course the same voice. 'tis her that I see...' I thought. and this made me comfortable and calm
I don't think there is any need for comprehensive analysis here. to start with, I would never be able to say anything bad about the concert. from general perspective, on the other hand, there was nothing I could be dissatisfied with
the concert consisted of several blocks - opening, love and music, prayer, passion, the native place of heart, memorable musicals, and songs of love - dream is endless
well, an opening is an opening. I would rather include the title song - 'Amore e Musica' - in the opening also, but 'tis in the section 'love and music', the rest of it given for 'standard jazz numbers'
'prayer' is probably my favourite, because Kiriya-sama's perfect taste and sense of music made two masterpieces out of famous songs - 'Ave Maria' and 'Nella Fantasia', both in original arrangement
'passion' speaks for itself and I only need to add that this section included dancing also which was unbelievably hot... >___<
'the native place of heart' and 'memorable musicals' are actually a Takarazuka corner full of great hits which I couldn't listen to without tears. I wasn't able to see SP or Studio 54 live, but I heard my favourite songs at least. even though 'twas not in Takarazuka...
the last part consists of great hits like 'Caruso' which was absolutely beautifully performed by Kiriya-sama
and of course 'My Way' is the best. I am not sure whether Kiriya-sama's voice got better after much singing (same as mine, haha), or she was previously saving energy to make a gorgeous finale, or 'twas my imagination, but her last notes were marvellously strong and full of sound
if I am not mistaken, there were 3 'encores'. each time I was already saying goodbye to her, but the curtain raised again and again. I wiped my tears with a tissue after 'My Way' and never cried during the rest, wanting to carve in my memory everything I saw. my eyes were still a bit red, however, when I looked at myself in the mirror in the toilet several minutes later. I didn't mind it
when we came to Quatre Reves on Saturday I realised one thing. even though my support to Takarazuka and Moon Troupe hasn't vanished, my heart doesn't belong to it anymore. my original intention was to buy only 3 DVDs of Kiriya-sama there, but when I looked into my purse I understood I could afford something else. after doing 2 or 3 circles round the shop I took a mirror and 'Algiers no Otoko' Le Cinq. I didn't want Ryuu-sama's Top Star goods, though I have to admit there was a cute pendant, not the one with a smiley. I didn't want any calendars, though they were advertised here and there, and I didn't want any stills. I didn't buy Kageki with Asumi-sama on the cover, and I didn't buy RomiJuri or Spring Snow programme. the only thing I regret not buying is the 'Takarazuka Oldies' CD, but I decided not to search for it. the new Moon is something I will follow closely and probably sympathize with, but 'tis no longer my obsession. no longer my 'native place of heart'

Happy Birthday Kiriya-sama

If not for my Google calendar I would have forgotten about this date. I met my groupmates in the morning and spent the whole day talking about their having been abroad. I bought buttons for my new raincoat. I adjusted some decorating elements to my wrist-watch. I drank tea with chocolate sweets I got today. There was no place for Kiriya-sama's birthday in my mind today. Why? I was dancing happily when I saw the tickets available at Sunrise Promotion website, and I was crying when I saw no link to the purchase system, and then I was crying again when it appeared, but with tears of joy. And now...
For the first time I realised what was making me so frustrated, unhappy and apathetic. 'tis the internal subconscious fear that I won't love Kiriya-sama's concert the same I loved her Takarazuka performances, and that I won't be able to accept her new path.
Oh, that can't be, right? And still, I am scared...
