IMHO. 'Rurouni Kenshin' ~ one of a kind

When I raised my eyes to the grey sky covered on the sides by lavish green that appears in late May, I realised it’s been exactly 10 years.
_____
So, the first time was exactly 10 years ago. And this series was one of the greatest discoveries in the world of anime, even with all those mistranslations and censorship implied by the American distributor whose release was bought by our channel. You’d understand me when I say that the seeing ‘Kenshin’ for the first time was a revolutionary thing, if you know what it’s like to have only a dozen of major TV channels and 250 Mb per month as the only source of information about the new world called ‘anime’.
The story was so great that after trying to ignore the broadcast for a month, because I thought I better not watch it at all than watch partially because of my busy schedule at school, I ultimately couldn’t help watching, even though I’d missed some of the initial episodes. And I preferred to hear the episodes I missed retold to me by my friend than giving up on ‘Kenshin’ at all.
Before starting to watch it for the third time, I thought I’d skip the unnecessary fillers or watch boring episodes fast forward. But there weren’t any boring episodes. Not for a single moment I felt like skipping anything. The thought didn’t even cross my mind.
What you discover 10 years after seeing this series for the first time, is that it’s no less interesting no matter how many times you watch. Moreover, you understand and appreciate it even more.
Is there any need to analyze the story deeply? I don’t think so. It is the case when every character deserves so much respect and every story is so elaborate that words won’t express it.
I loved them, the characters and their stories. I loved the background music and theme songs. I loved the seiyuus, all of them, everyone. The other day I read an article where the author was suggesting that we, fans who feel nostalgic about the older anime, stop regretting about good old times and go watch new series trying to find new masterpieces among them. I’ll explain. This nostalgia is caused by the very fact that you didn’t have to search for a masterpiece those days, it just came to your hands naturally. And I’ll add. The only aspect that surpasses older series in the newer anime series is art, and even that is not a given. Yes, older series were simpler and maybe less attractive visually. However the rest was perfect, while modern series can only offer one aspect in high quality, while the others inevitably fall behind.
Rephrasing Kenshin, I’d put it like this: maybe anime is supposed to be serious, educating, mature and realistic, but I still prefer this kind of anime, where characters shout out names of their techniques, where enemies are defeated with willpower, where characters may help circus artists or sumo wrestlers and the next month go and save the country mastering new techniques on their way… At least, they’re all alive, not moving cardboard figures.
I don't really remember, but Wiki says that the first broadcast of 'Kenshin' - the one I saw for the first time also - ended on July 27th. So today, 10 years after I end my 'rewatching', too, and say goodbye.

three things that led me to Takarazuka ~ some memories of my past

I have been telling my friends that there were only 2 anime series that made me feel interested in Takarazuka. I was forgetting one thing, not as obvious but even more important.
It happened 5 years ago when I was rewatching 'Samurai X' or 'Rurouni Kenshin'. Already having stable internet connection, unlike the first time I was watching it on TV, I could indulge in watching it with the original sound and check some info in the web whenever I wanted. That's why I could fully appreciate the Japanese art of voice acting and immediately fell in love with Suzukaze Mayo. Her voice was some kind of magic and I couldn't fail to check what kind of person she is. She turned out to be a former Takarazuka Top star, but that time it was nothing but a name to me.
Just a month later I started watching 'Sakura Wars' or 'Sakura Taisen'. I've read that the composer was inspired by the OSK all-female troupe, if I am not mistaken, so it's no wonder the soundtrack is full of josei-kageki-like songs - songs reminding those performed by all-female troupes (and there are quite a few in Japan, which is a topic I will develop in a separate post later).
But this isn't the first time I touched the 'female revue' esthetics. The first time was 'Sailor Moon'. And I'm not speaking of Haruka, the obvious Takarazuka-inspired symbol. I'm speaking of the Three Lights. Yes, Ogata Megumi is great, but the heart of 90s lies in these two songs.

happy birthday to ms Suzukaze and ms Aono

the fact is, I stopped congratulating any siennes with their birthdays, since it is 面倒くさい, too troublesome, and since it has no meaning if I simply write something in my blog. if I truly wanted to congratulate any of them, I should rather send a card at least. however, yesterday's birthday added one more year to ms Suzukaze and I started thinking...
she still agreed to voice Kenshin last year in a new OVA. I wonder if her voice changed in comparison to what was more than 15 years ago. I have yet to watch it, so I don't know. I only know that voice actors and actresses in 90s were incredibly cool, and there is no one to inherit this side of anime world now. if they decided to make the cast for the new RuroKen entirely new, how would Kenshin sound like? I cannot imagine. there is only one other seiyuu who could replace ms Suzukaze - ms Ogata, from what I have heard she was chosen to voice Kenshin in the audio-dramas. however, she belongs to the same generation. find me at least one woman in her 20s who can sound like them 20 years ago
and ms Aono is celebrating her birthday today. well, I hope she is doing well, since I lost her trace last year after 'Bad Boys'. stop. I did not even properly learn about it, and did not finish translating the article either! ohhhh >_<

My Victorian Summer

Victorian Summer - this is how I called the Windows theme I created myself in July. The reason is that after watching 'Dantalian' I decided to dedicate the rest of my summer to watching anime where everything takes place in Europe of the 19th and early 20th century. On the other hand, the second part of Shin Kyoto Hen comes out in August and I was going to dedicate that month to Suzukaze-sama. Unfortunately, I cannot even fund any of her albums. Even Jpopsuki has nothing.
Highly doubt searching in Japan itself would bring any result.
Guess my expenses rise dramatically. To the huge amount of money necessary for buying Kiriya-sama stuff I need to add some for purchasing Suzukaze-sama CDs, obviously rare - provided I find them...
Despair...

my humble opinion and funny moments: 'Puck' by Moon Troupe (1992)

meseems, I express my feelings about this show by running the room in circles and shouting something like 'WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA'
as nothing else can be enough for expressing how much I liked the show.
I love Suzukaze-sama, I love the Moon Troupe, I love everything about it..... the mess on the stage, the constant funny lines and the behaviour of all the characters, and Puck in the first place, made me ROFL to tears.
just try to understand...

Daniel - Suzy!
Puck - Suzy! Suzy! are you 'back of the neck'? what are you doing, tell me what, tell me what!
_____
as fas as I understand, there is a play on words 'Suuji' which is the name of the girl Suzy and 'kubisuji' which means 'back of the neck'

Oberon very angry and disappointed about Tytania's attitude towards him

Oberon - it is vexing, vexing, vexing!
Puck - Oberon-sama, vexing? and the vexing pose is?
Oberon - vexiiiiing!
Puck - ooo, that's cool!
Oberon - is it?
Puck - yep, cool!
Oberon - it's not the time to be saying this...

Oberon - go by this vine!
Puck - yes!
Oberon - is it not situated opportunely?
Puck - really, situated quite opportunely!
Oberon - ready?
everybody - let's goo! oh... let's gooo!
Oberon - I rely on you, Puck!
Puck - you can rely on me, Oberon-sama!

- what is your name? P... U... C... K... PUKKU??? what a strange name... but you are not that suspicious, so for now, let's come to my place. let's go! it is really ok, we are doing a band... we're doing a band! do you happen to play any musical instrument? oh... then, can you dance? oh! that's better!

no disrespect or discrimination intended

me just though... what if me intuition is not that bad?
well, me said Sena-sama suited Tsukigumi, but me is not saying she was Moonish to the core. the first part me saw her playing was Alex, and it influenced me a little, me should admit, but me was quite doubtful Sena-sama could really play a comical part. well. now methinks she can, but her 'type' or 'theatrical line' so as to say was a little inclining towards the 'affectedness' or even 'pathos' things.
so me suddenly felt like checking out who's the 'native' Mooner and who's a 'transferrer'
as me has spoken of Kiriya-sama and Sena-sama a lot, let us proceed further in the history.
Ayaki-sama. she was transfered to Moon just to become a Top. she didn't gain her position as soon as she entered, though. however, 'tis quite obvious she was to become a Top if she moved to Moon from Senka.
me has never liked Shibuki-sama too much for the reason she seemed to emotionless and somewhat cruel (well... me tends to have a starnge and wrong impression of people sometimes), but then me saw a small part of her performance and me saw how nice she could be. methought, me should watch her someday. then me knew she's also a Mooner, which is the next surprise in me line of me favourite siennas turning out to be Mooners. well. Shibuki-sama was working in other troupes for 10 years, but then she came to the Moon and spent 7 years there. 7 seems to be quite enough for me to count her as almost a 'native' one
Makoto-sama and Kuze-sama are the big mistakes of mine. though looking quite a lot of the Sena-sama type, they spent a long time in Moon.
the rest, however, seem quite Moonish to me. and they prove their Moonishness by working for Moon for the greater part of their career

my intuition

it either exists in an obvious way, or abandones me giving no hint, no tip and no advice.
now, however, me would like to speak of my intuition working.
why is that almost all the girls me grows fond of happen to be of Tsukigumi?
me speaks nothing of Kiriya-sama, who was the reason me had the interest in Moon Troupe, but of the others me would like to mention the following
it turned out me loves the nibante and sanbante very much. well, me calls Masao nibante and Mirio sanbante, though 'tis obvious that everything is not that easy in the Troupe. however, let your humble servant consider the things to be just as they are stated by him.
if me isn't mistaken once again, my beautiful Suzukaze-sama was also a part of Moon in her time. and if the attention me payed to Masao and Mirio is generally explained by the fact me saw them in the first Zuka's performance ever, Suzukaze-sama's case is a REAL coincidence.
the more me read the list of the other Troupes, the more me was astonished with the fact me cannot love all the actors in the other Troupes. e. g. in case we speak of Yuzuki-sama, me cannot say the others attract me that much, though me conclusion still is based on the pics only, and awaits it's provement by watching. if me honourable guests ask me about the Cosmos, me shall answer me dislikes Oozora-san as usual, however 'tis nibante who attracts me attention and who was a kind of compensation for the possible prospects of the necessity of watching Cosmos perfomance in Tokyo.
me should say a couple of words 'bout the musumeyaku-san too. though me doesn't pay much attention to them usually, me really likes Marimo-chan, her voice and her face expressions are, well, one of the best me have ever seen, though me lacks the experience to say for all of them.
the list, however, doesn't end here. the voice of Shizuki Asato astonished me from the very beginning of the 'kimi no na o yobeba'. and though she changed Troupes, she was also a part of Moonies once.
the most surprising thing is that Sawaki Rizu happens to be a Moonie too! and it was her voice that seemed the most unique on the '14 covers' album to your humble servant. me cannot say why me is so glad, as Sawaki-chan doesn't mean anything to me as for now, but me is really pleased that Tsukigumi collects the most interesting personalities and appearances and voices. well, the only thing that doesn't please me is that Oozora was a part of Moonies, too, and she was even ahead of Kiriya-sama. me is so glad she was transferred to the Cosmos. she suits it quite well, and moreover she suits her musumeyaku too. that means, also, that me dislikes the musumeyaku almost as much as me does towards Oozora-san, though this attitude may alter someday (but quite unlikely!)
