three things that led me to Takarazuka ~ some memories of my past

I have been telling my friends that there were only 2 anime series that made me feel interested in Takarazuka. I was forgetting one thing, not as obvious but even more important.
It happened 5 years ago when I was rewatching 'Samurai X' or 'Rurouni Kenshin'. Already having stable internet connection, unlike the first time I was watching it on TV, I could indulge in watching it with the original sound and check some info in the web whenever I wanted. That's why I could fully appreciate the Japanese art of voice acting and immediately fell in love with Suzukaze Mayo. Her voice was some kind of magic and I couldn't fail to check what kind of person she is. She turned out to be a former Takarazuka Top star, but that time it was nothing but a name to me.
Just a month later I started watching 'Sakura Wars' or 'Sakura Taisen'. I've read that the composer was inspired by the OSK all-female troupe, if I am not mistaken, so it's no wonder the soundtrack is full of josei-kageki-like songs - songs reminding those performed by all-female troupes (and there are quite a few in Japan, which is a topic I will develop in a separate post later).
But this isn't the first time I touched the 'female revue' esthetics. The first time was 'Sailor Moon'. And I'm not speaking of Haruka, the obvious Takarazuka-inspired symbol. I'm speaking of the Three Lights. Yes, Ogata Megumi is great, but the heart of 90s lies in these two songs.

reversed songs

I felt like it's possible, but now I know it for sure: the intro of Susumu Hirasawa's 'Parade' is a reversed line from another song. People who know it are saying it's from 'Nurse Cafe'. I couldn't sit still and checked it by playing the song in reverse. It's really similar, though not absolutely authentic.
Speaking of reversed lines, there was one song that bothered me, but now that I've checked it, this case is not as interesting.  The song is 'Niji' - 虹 (A DAY IN JAPAN Version) - by Denki Groove where the intro is obviously a musical phrase turned backwards, but this part is simply the last lines of the chorus sung only by the girl.

'Special DVD-BOX MASAKI RYU' ~ once upon a time...

First, Holst's 'Jupiter'. The tender theme - 'tsubomi' by Kobukuro. Then, suddenly, Golden Bomber's 'memeshikute'. Then 'shinku ni moete' from 'Gone with the Wind'. Then GReeeeN's 'kiseki'.
And Black Ryuu versus White Ryuu. Well, to be precise a bad emperor versus a good count.
Huh?
I'd say this DVD-box was strange, but very enjoyable. Whatever people say, I think Ryuu is a good singer. Her visual image, though, was questionable. As for me, I liked her a lot. However it's totally noticeable that she is supposed to cater for younger fans, singing all those kind of songs and wearing such stuff - it's like saying 'hey I'm soooo young and trendy!' People say she's too young and her image makes her look even younger, and I already see many fans disappointed with that. But I'm ok with that Why cannot they introduce something up-to-date sometimes?
The concept of the DVD - all those kings and counts - was not fully explained, all we have is just a short premise and then follows the row of musical clips, which is all good but does not really develop the 'story'.

conclusion
I'm her fan now and will be, probably, until she leaves Takarazuka. Maybe even after that. Surely.
During a talk in the car she utters that she started playing games only after her little brother was born. I want to see him... I WANT TO SEE HIM!!! I BET HE'S CUTE!!! AWWWWWW

'Red Data Girl' anime ~ this will be a very long post and don't say I didn't warn you

The conclusion that little witch Chocolat from 'Sugar Sugar Rune' made after living in the human world for some time was: it seems that human boys tend to tease girls they like. Well, it's ok if they really just tease. It also can be understood when a little boy kinda hates a girl and throws balls at her without mercy. But what if a story about the Heroine and the Hero starts from true, sheer hatred?

story and characters
What a usual shoujo looks like is 'they are obviously attracted to each other but cannot confess but that's SOOO CUUUUUTE'. What RDG starts with is a girl and a boy who openly dislike each other without that usual catchy 'she's just not being honest with herself'. Not that there's no room for such feelings, but they appear much later and not just because 'he's so cool' or 'she's so tsundere'. In case of RDG we have not the typical shoujo heroine who climbs up trees like Candy from Candy-Candy, travels the world seeking for adventures like Nadja from 'Ashita no Nadja', or bravely fights monsters like Hikaru from 'Rayearth', but a shy, meek, calm girl. However, she's also not the 'Diabolik lovers' damsel-in-distress MANUKE (coward, doesn't have any nerve) type who lets others do whatever they want with her. If by any chance you're interested in my opinion, the usual shoujo heroine is an IEE, or ENFp in the MBTI, while Izumiko is her 'mirror', EII or INFj. Unlike the widespread tsundere type (ENFp or ENTp or INTp), she's honest with her feelings:
In general she's completely ok when it comes to discussing feelings and relationships and does not hesitate to make a face like this when asked whether she'd agree to be hit on:
She also has strong will. It reminds me how one socionics developer said about Melanie in 'Gone with the wind'. Such heroines are frequently weak or at least not very strong physically and know nothing about demonstrating strength to the extent they aren't able to protect themselves (extroverted sensing is the sore point)
but never hesitate when they have to show their inner strength, even if they have to say something harsh.
They don't have a problem facing a morally difficult situation or when they have to make a decision that requires using not logic (T) but ethic (F).
Izumiko also reacts very calmly when facing situations where other people would not know what to reply.
And in the end she allows herself to show her true feelings which she was so much afraid of doing.
I'm not saying I'm an expert, but our Hero, Miyuki, does look like her dual type. Here's what we have - a guy who values physical and mental strength and does not hesitate to train himself, very harsh in the beginning but eventually giving way to the Heroine's kindness seeing how she never gets angry or arrogant with him no matter what he does or says (thinking, sensing). Unlike her, he knows what to do and how to do it, and wants everything done properly - I'll enter a university and become a good member of the society, he says (plus judging). Even though in the last episode he proves to be actually loyal and refuses to take actions that may hurt people dear to him, that only proves he's bad with human relations and feelings - it took him 12 episodes to get used to having a person to care for and acknowledge his feelings. In other words, he needed a proof of feelings from someone else (NF) so that he could show his loyalty with actions (ST).
By the fact he takes the initiative and responsibility eagerly I assume he's an extrovert, and thus I have the conclusion that I wanted to reach. And it was just all very smooth how he almost hated her in the beginning but then voluntarily took her under his care.
If you're wondering whether I'm really into that guy, Yukimasa, the father of the Hero, then I'll tell you - of course I'm not serious. I'm just collecting hot guys to... to look at. Under no circumstances would I ever acknowledge violence as a method of upbringing. However, this is the reality that we must face when watching this series: in this story physical damage is considered something usual, not forgivable but acceptable.
If you feel disturbed by it, you can try to manage to pay no heed to this side of the story. Since the strange relationship between Miyuki and his father will never be explained either. Or the circumstances about Izumiko's family. Or anything else. While the feelings between Izumiko and Miyuki, and also the three Souda siblings are properly shown, the story itself, unlike what you'd expect from the description, contains even no real battles with enemies that come to capture the Heroine, and the anime does not create a smooth line of events. Rather it looks like a collection of important moments from the original novel with absolutely no attempts to fill the gaps between them. No wonder it gets low rates from people writing comprehensive reviews. There are a lot of examples when I liked an anime that people rate with 1 out of ten, but that's due to the fact I liked the genre while others didn't. This time it's not as simple, RDG is not just aimed at a narrow audience, it's also too limited in time.

graphics
The very first seconds of the first episode can give you a good idea of what's graphics like in RDG.
All landscapes and objects of nature are done in detail and look extremely realistic. Places in the urban areas are also done to look like real ones with all necessary textures and patterns.
Some objects were obviously made in 3D.
Here is one problem, however. RDG makes an attempt to look beautiful but the story is not told properly. I would probably prefer that the same amount of work be put into narration. Just to be fair I have to say, though, that the style is better than on those pictures I saw on the manga covers, and I prefer the way the characters look in the anime to the manga version.
If we take the graphics as a separate kind of art, it's beautiful and so detailed I'd even say it verges on being wasted. Such images deserve to be viewed for a longer time than it takes in RDG. If you want to check it out, just look for the menus from the DVD.

voice acting
The first time I ever heard Uchiyama was in 'Bimbougami'. Even though a comedy, thanks to the seiyuus' work the characters demonstrated a great deal of personality and deepness. Since then I wrote Uchiyama's name in the list of 'promising seiyuus'. He was the second reason for me to watch RDG, the first being the fact that it explores the world of Japanese folklore and Buddhism and Shinto religion. I was not wrong when I had high hopes for him. In case you're wondering if there's any proper romance in the anime, just watch the opening video and remember the fact it won't get any further. However, if after that you're wondering whether it's worth watching or not, I'll tell you what I thought. It's worth watching at least to hear him say these three words.

Other seiyuus were all very good, even though I don't know them. Not many seiyuus have their own unique voices - many are just representatives of a certain type. Say, Hayami Saori is the 'calm, shy girl' type, Yonezawa Madoka is a good 'active positive girl', Ishikawa Kaito and Kimura Ryouhei are 'bright and a little bit childish guys'. On one hand, it's not that I'll remember them very well after watching RDG. On the other hand, have you ever switched off the sound in an anime? Try to do so and look at the picture. It's moving but there's not enough life in it until it is animated by the seiyuu's voice, especially it's true in case of RDG because it has this kind of art which is so beautiful that it's almost lifeless.
Checking up the more famous seiyuus, Miyano Mamoru fans will have nothing to enjoy here, his Harukawa was plain. Mr Ishida was the same as always. I guess he'll never be given any other kind of a character - they are all cunning guys having ulterior motives, no matter be it for the sake of the protagonists or not. Tanaka Rie as the goddess was absolutely beautiful, at least this is how I would want her to be - self-confident, with that confidence covering all areas of her soul, arrogant, even sexy, which also is a part of her confidence. Kugimiya Rie as Wamiya, who is a boy, created a very good character, I'll give her that. Nojima Hirofumi also made his Takayanagi extremely 3D. What I'm trying to say is that thanks to such seiyuus the characters were even more realistic and credible than it could be imagined without a voice. Mr Fukuyama was voicing a character who's, like it seems to me, closer to his real age than usual, but hey, he's convincing no matter who his character is.

music
If you can distinguish between Annabel's songs, then you're a genius. I can't. All of them are the same to me. This statement includes all other singers of that kind - Yuuki Aira, Misawa Aki, Ceui etc. In other words, the opening song is extremely boring and plain. The ending song is much better, since it's by Masumi Ito (Hikaru Nanase). She also wrote the soundtrack. I'd say it's the classical type, the music is not very outstanding but it sure has its charm and every melody fits the moments it's playing at. Her songs are very unusual and though I respect her, I wouldn't listen to 'yokan' out of the anime.
A completely different thing is the insert theme song of Izumiko, 'Izumiko no mai', and 'Kakugo' - one of the most beautiful theme songs I have ever heard. That the problem lies in the composer is just too obvious because it is performed by the same Annabel, but what different fates these two songs have.

conclusion - after 4 years
How things change with time... I clearly remember being dissatisfied with the narration, namely the fact that the background is never revealed, which made watching RDG a real torture, wanting to know more and not being able to. However, after 4 years, RDG looks very different to me, and is an example of how a short story should be presented when the ending of the anime is not the ending of the story. Yes, RDG is the true way to end a season. No, no only to end a season, it should be the model of how to make a season - how to present characters, how to let them develop, how to keep everything going. Despite the vagueness and lack of enlightenment, these 12 episodes set a solid ground for further development, regardless of its existence. At least, plot holes here are not black holes, sucking any possible continuation into abyss.
Moreover, it should be no coincidence that I recalled 'The good witch of the west' and 'RDG' at the same time - both were written by the same author. Even unconsciously, I must have been remembering these two works as similar, with the same kind of fascinating, kind, tender story. Now I know for sure that if I ever want something for my soul to have a rest in, I have these two.

a week with Shingo Nakamura

Like he says himself in his interview to LessThan3, his music is for dancing, but also for a night at home or everywhere. Well, everywhere - except for the dance-floor - is where I was listening his tracks to.

best track in the discography - 'Depict'
Seriously, it's beautiful. I could not stand still when I was listening to it. It's inspiring. I won't be surprised if it leads me to draw something, maybe even today or tomorrow.

just wonderful - 'Blue light' and 'Alice in Wonderland'
These are wonderful. The other singles were also good. I could not choose any of them to say it was unsuccessful. But 'Blue light' and 'Alice' really create a very special feeling and are easy to associate with their titles.

an ode to Hokkaido - 'Sapporo' and 'Hakodate'
These were probably the best tracks in the first album, 'Sapporo'. Hearing them, I thought I could really feel how much mr Nakamura loves those places. Now that I learned that Daishi Dance is also from Sapporo, if what the aforementioned interview says is right, I can only wonder why Hokkaido gives birth to so many wonderful projects, since I've already fell in love with sakanaction.

promising but did not live up to expectations - 'There for me', 'Khafre'
The former had a wonderful title, but the music felt a bit plain. The latter had a strange mysterious name, but did not prove to be as interesting as it could.

ethnic - 'Words unspoken'
This track starts a bit plain, and I even always wonder why I included it into my playlist, but then I hear the middle part of the song and understand why...

some other tracks I'd recommend - 'Perception', 'Behind the sunset'
and the whole 'Days' album, especially 'Fauna' and '1247'
'Days', even though a title track for the album, was only half-good

best song for a brisk-paced walk - just any of them
I don't know if it's only me, but my pace is slightly faster than 2 steps a second, which is considered to be a good pace for a healthy walk. It looks like progressive house is just what's necessary to keep the pace, huh? =) Anyway, almost all mr Nakamura's tracks are having 125 to 129 BPM - and they matched my pace nicely. I was feeling wonderful when walking down the street and looking around me with mr Nakamura's music filling up my head.

lyrics translation. Lareine's 'To be continued'

Lyrics

English

I know we won’t meet again,
I know
But I cannot erase these feelings of mine yet,
They wouldn’t melt yet

White memories fall down, flickering,
In a town where the lights went down
They will surely melt away in the end –
That’s what I was thinking last year [with regret]
But now I want to forget
That we were always together
You can’t be jealous of a stranger, right?
No matter how brilliant the town is

The flowers are crying, they are crying in sorrow
If I knew it would end like this, then

I wish [those feelings] could melt away
I wish they could
fade away that time
If we just separated silently
They’d become snow, I know

I know we won’t meet again,
I know
But I cannot erase these feelings of mine yet,
They wouldn’t melt yet

The flowers are crying, they are crying in sorrow
They are waiting for the end of winter

I wish [those feelings] could melt away
I wish they could fade away that time

If we just separated silently
They’d become snow, I know
If I met you by instance,
How should I face you and how should I smile?
If I met you by instance,
I would be able to admit that

___
Well, that's something I thought of myself, but that's an obvious thing for any person who knows the art of understanding the Japanese tendency to cut 'unnecessary' words (here - a subject) out of the sentence: the verbs 'tokeru' and 'kieru' ('to melt' and 'to fade away' here) that are frequently repeated (also 'kesu' - 'to erase' - in the third line) surely are connected to 'feelings' and 'memories' that are compared to snow, that is why I put them into [ ] brackets to explain the meaning of the chorus.
Also, many sources put a ? in the last line of the song. Since I don't hear it as a question, I left it as an affirmation, which can be wrong in the end in case there really was a ? in the original lyrics.
As always, I marked in different colour my favourite lines that actually made me want to translate the song.

associations. a white song

If you ask me what the colour of this song is, I will say - it is white, with some golden sunshine mixed. It is the colour of my teenage, of bright afternoon after school, of calm and peaceful days.
I do respect Enya a lot and this feeling has not changed. But I doubt I will ever be able to listen to her songs again.
Those white days are gone.

translation. もう愛せない (mou ai senai) by Kokia

Translation

Who could predict such an ending?
Why does it happen exactly now, when it’s just one thing among the infinite?
What we do not expect always comes suddenly – same goes both for a happy thing and not
If so, is it a trial for me to be prepared for everything that comes next?

Even if it's really so, at least until the tears in my eyes dry out

I can’t go on now. I can’t love anymore
I can’t stand up already. I don’t understand anything

I don’t know now if time of forgiveness will ever come. But for sure
Beyond the drained dry sorrow the future will come for someone

Sometime dawn will come, and I will properly meet the new day, but until then

I can’t go on now. I can’t love anymore
I can’t stand up already. I can’t see anything already
I can’t go on now. I can’t love anymore now
I can’t stand up already now. I can’t love anymore now

I promise. No matter what happens, even taking some rest, I will move on to the peaceful times that will come someday.
But just for now
I can’t love
I can’t love
I can’t love
I can’t love

KiriMari, dancing starshine

when one has a lot of things to do, one often ends up doing nothing from the to-do list, but something completely irrelevant. so here it is, the result of my 'whatever but not preparing for the exam'
as always, I use videos with my favourite one and only Top Combi, this time pairing them with a wonderful song which is 33 years old already, but still sounds fresh and unique - 'Dansing Starshine' by Momoe Yamaguchi. I used to love this song until I made a video with it love this song because of its 80s mood (composed in 1980 exactly), vividness and brightness and warmness of the melody, and of course, the wonderful voice of ms Yamaguchi. the lyrics with translation will follow very soon in a separate post, but I can say now that I believe the words and the song title itself suit the two perfectly. they were are like starshine on the stage

siam shade's songs are truly universal...

crossing the 'Golden Bridge', listening to 'Love', suddenly a traffic jam. if not for the sympathy for the people who are not sitting but standing, I would wish the moment lasted forever. why does 'Love' always start playing when the weather is fine... I raise my eyes to the sky just to notice the clouds are so beautiful, like the ones in the PV
in a wet dress, after an unexpected rain came out of the blue, I return home late in the evening. 'tis 10 o'clock and the sky is even darker than the previous time, when I was going home and made a photo. why does 'koe ni' start playing when I go along the evening street...
each time listening to Siam Shade, I notice something special. the world around starts to sparkle and it feels so calm. if only I could tell them how music can save a life

for some reason I cannot find the post with the link to the 'lesson' how to embed only a certain part of a YT video into your blogger post. at least, here is the principle how to do that
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="***" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/_____?rel=0&amp;start=***&amp;end=***&amp;autoplay=0" width="***"></iframe>

instead of *** insert the number in pixels (usually 0 for border, 360 for height and 640 for width), instead of _____ insert the code of the video on YT, after 'start=' and 'end=' insert the time of start and end in seconds

IMHO. Yuming Spectacle SHANGRILA III ~ and when it ends...

the Japanese are masters of creating colourful, impressing, amazing shows. what can a combination of Yumi Arai, Moscow Circus and world famous synchronised swimming performers Miho Takeda and Virginie Dedieu lead to? and the finale made me shed a couple of tears. I wonder what I would feel if I saw it live...

the full rip can be found here
and some excerpts are included here
or you can watch a part of the show

p. s.
and you know what? Yuming learned all the staff members' names by heart and introduced everyone, including the Russian performers, Japanese musicians and guests

omg, Takarazuka, what are you doing? ~ I have watched 'Take Five' previews for the first time

for some reason, I have completely missed this project, but why am I completely not_surprised? my feeling that the recent actions show that Takarazuka is desperately trying to challenge itself with new fields of activity, expand its audience and reach the groups of people previously not concerned with the Revue is only getting stronger
well, if 'tis them - 'twill be no 'Koizora'

p. s. the usual pop song as a soundtrack...

TMV - 'Misty Station TRAIN'

TMV. well, there are AMV and MMV. obviously a Takarazuka fanvid would be called TMV. agree?
this idea has been bothering me for a year. yes, exactly one year. last May after hearing 'tamashii no refrain' in 'Misty Station' I decided to download the whole discography of Takahashi Youko and this is how I discovered a song called 'TRAIN'. it belongs to the album 'Sore wa Toki ni Anata o Hagemashi, Toki ni wa Sasae to Naru Mono'. if you translate this title you will read something like this - 'sometimes it will encourage you, sometimes it will become your support'. and this was very timely to me, who was somewhat depressed after the Great Moon Troupe Retirement
well, after watching Misty Station, a Revue themed 'journey' and moreover with train used as the main symbol, 'tis only natural that I immediately associated the song called 'TRAIN' with it. moreover, the lyrics are very special here. the translation will be provided in a separate post
so, here is the result. at 3 o'clock in the night, huh?
